This weekend it was time for the final stop of the Dutch Kiteboarding Championship at Scheveningen beach. This year we planned 3 stops at three different locations. I am the chairman of the NVWK (Dutch Class Organization for Kiteboarding in the Netherlands) and together with Exventure we assist in putting together events like this. Unfortunately, the wind wasn’t kind to us this year.
It all started early, very early, in the morning. Being at the beach when it’s still dark feels very calm and special. I took a moment to enjoy the salty air and my morning tea. After that we had some organizing to do because the riders would arrive at nine with the first possible start at ten. However, the wind forecast totally plummeted after we made the GO call. Let’s hope for the best…
After the skippers meeting we decided to wait for the wind. The first possible time to start moved to 11, to 12, to 1… It didn’t look that great. The forecasted 17 knots didn’t come through, the wind didn’t get stronger than 10-11. Some riders got on the water to see if they could get some pressure in their kites, but it wasn’t enough. We entertained ourselves though, with the beats provided by the DJ, freestyle frisbee contests, catching up with old friends and making new ones. It was still a great day and we made the best of it.
At the end of the day we gathered the riders and had some disappointing news, it wasn’t going to happen this weekend. Therefore, the results from the first stop were also the final results. It’s the risk of the trade but still it can be disappointing. Luckily we had a successful competition in Workum earlier this year so we can crown the new Dutch champions! Congratulations to Steven Akkersdijk and Annelous Lammers, they win the title of 2015 Dutch Champion. For the rest of the riders, thanks for being there and sharing your stoke. See you guys next year!
