September/ October is the birthday season in my family. What I noticed is that everyone is serving sugary cakes, fizzy drinks and fatty snacks. This causes all the women in my family to complain about their weight and how hard it is to keep tending to your healthy diet if all these unhealthy choices are getting rubbed in your face. And it’s not just a weight thing, when you make a healthy lifestyle choice you might want to keep your sugar and saturated fat intake low. This will give you more energy and a positive mindset. That’s why I decided to take another approach. I spent half a day preparing healthy party snacks that make everyone happy.

I will share some healthy party snack ideas with you that are not only good birthday options but also with the holidays coming up (it’s holiday season before you know it!) you will have some ‘green’ options. Let’s impress your guests shall we!

Veggie sticks with dip

You can never overeat when it comes to vegetables. For the veggie sticks you can use cucumber, carrots, bell pepper, celery or whatever comes to mind. The different colours make a festive picture. As a dip you can use hummus, carrotspread with ginger or cottage cheese based dip with parsley or chive.

Spicy roasted chickpeas

Potato chips are addictive, mainly because of its crunch. These spicy roasted chickpeas are a great alternative. Chickpeas are full of good nutrients, they are high protein, high fiber and contain a significant amount of B vitamins, zinc and iron. All you have to do is marinate the chickpeas in some olive oil with bell pepper, chili powder and a bit of salt . Than you roast them in the oven for 30 minutes, turn them over and leave them in the oven for another 10. That’s it!

Fruit skewer

You can go wild with this one. All you need is some skewers and a bunch of fruit. I like to combine different colours and tastes, such as blueberries, banana, strawberry, mango, kiwi, pineapple and grapes. Rich in vitamins and they taste sweet in your mouth.

The list goes on of course, but I hope I have inspired you a little. Just because everyone serves chips, cheese and sausage rolls doesn’t mean you should! Pick your own path, your guests will be glad you did :).
